What the VT 95 and VT 98 series railbuses were for the German Federal Railway, the Autorail Brossel series 553 and 554 are for the SNCB. The 553 series were built during the war years from 1941 onwards. After the war, the vehicles were further developed and entered service as the 554 series in 1954. The Belgian company Brossel was responsible for the design of both series, and the carriages were built by Ragheno in Malines.
They were powered by eight-cylinder inline engines, some of which were supplied by General Motors for the 554 series. They accelerated the 553 series branch line railcars to 66 km/h; the 554 series could reach speeds of up to 80 km/h. In the 1970s, the 554 series was renumbered 46, and the previous 553 series became the 49. Vehicles from both series are preserved as museums.
